We have finally been visited by Peace Corps! The head of
security and the northern office manager came by Mariri during provincial
testing. The director had finally decided to paint our house once he realized
that important people were coming by to see how we are doing. As I already
mentioned, we don’t get along very well with our director. He was supposed to
introduce us to members of our community, which he of course did not do. Thankfully,
Peace Corps took us to the closest town (there is nothing where we live except
the school) and introduced us to the chief and police. Funnily, it turned out
that the policeman we were introduced to is one of Liz’s English students and
one of my students is the town nurse.
Public transportation is a problem at our site. There are
not many options for us if we want to travel and the director blatantly lied to
Peace Corps about their availability before and after we arrived. The funny
part was when the head of our security asked our director about this. We were
so mad when he lied again to Peace Corps but thankfully when we told Peace
Corps about this later, they had already caught the director lying but didn’t
call him out on it. Ugh. We learned that our site is the hardest site here in
Cabo Delgado (bad relation with our director, difficulty with transportation,
small market, no electricity, no cell service inside our house, ect.) and that
Peace Corps would not have put us there if they had known how difficult it was.
They had trusted the director to tell the truth. It’s extremely frustrating but
I am once again so grateful I have Liz has a housemate. Not sure how I would have kept my sanity
without her. Thanks girl :)
On a happier note, we both received three care packages and
two letters!!! We were so happy and excited. Thank you everyone for all the
love and support. Totally made our day :D Also, our bathroom is finally
finished! The director had promise to have it done two weeks after we had
arrive in Mariri. Instead, it was finished two weeks ago lol but at least it’s
done! Here are a few photos that show the progress of the bathroom. They built
the bathroom where our house had been broken into and I forgot to take a final
picture with our tin roof door. Enjoy :)
